MS/HCL Film Noir Conventions


Themes:

  • Film noir is normally associated with dark Hollywood dramas. Hollywood was producing noir's in the 1940's and late 50's. They are normally set in a pessimistic world that is corrupted which was thought to be linked with the mood of that period which was the Hollywood depression due to the anxiety and depression caused by the war .



Narratives: 
  • Film noir is associated with having non-linear and convoluted story lines that frequently flashback or the opposite,flash forward as well as having a narrator that is usually the protagonist.
  • The narratives normally consist of false suspicions,false accusations,crime,heists and frauds


Visual techniques: 
  • Film noir conventions consist of very low key lighting and generally in black and white. The visuals are emphasized with the use of contrasting between different shadows which are of different shades.
  • The characters are normally obscured by darkness and surrounded by shadows and shot in low angle shots with wide lenses.
  • The use of props is also key with mirror shots,curved glass and other glass objects to create refractive effects to confuse the audience.
Characters:

  • The characters that normally play noir protagonists are usually detectives,corrupt police officers,jealous husband or other morally flawed and misunderstood people.
