MS:Evaluation questions

Question 1

Question 2

Question 3
I believe that our film as a whole would be best aimed at an independent distribution company, this is because our production is low budget.

Despite this the genres our opening are conventional of mainstream films which means that a large production company could potentially distribute our production.

A large number of companies have a separate subsidiaries that specialise in independent film making and distributing of the product.

For example, Warner independent pictures are distributors of films that are budgeted at under $20 million which means that our production would qualify for this category but due to this production being our first we would be classed as a potential risk to them.

Our production is aimed towards the mainstream horror/thriller audiences but due to its very low budget it would be shown in independent cinemas that attract audiences who watch low budget films of a similar genre. Our production could possibly be shown in a multiplex due to it following similar conventions of mainstream horror/thriller hybrid productions but due to its very low budget it would probably be distributed to an independent cinema house.

Our production would target a core audience of 16-24 year old males as our genre is a hybrid of thriller and horror.

In order to get our film noticed we would have to take our production to film festivals to be screened. As this is our first production we would take it to a small film festival such as the Portobello film festival situated in London which would be a very good place to get the production noticed.

On the other hand, if we wanted to get noticed by a production company on an industrial scale that could offer global distribution we would have to take our production to a film festival such as ‘shreikfest’ which specialises in our productions genre. This could however make it harder to get exposure due to its larger size and additional competition.

A production company that would be and normally distributes films of our genre is Entertainment film distributors who a specialised in UK independent cinema which would also suit or productions needs to be successful.

Question 4&5

Question 6
During the planning and development processes of our production we had used many different multimedia applications that were platforms of web 2.0. Examples of this are when we used blogger to post updated about our production. Blogger allowed both Henry and I to work collaboratively and edit and comment on each other’s posts to give feedback.

It was a very efficient way of displaying our work in a simple and easy to use format. It also allowed us to embed YouTube clips and images to make our blogger work more interesting and easy to understand when describing processes.

We also used YouTube embedding to show our preliminary task, wilderness woods footage and our rough cut of our final production.

To film our production we used a Cannon 550D for all aspects of the filming. With this camera it was possible for us to shoot in different modes such as :

1080p at either 25 or 24 frames per second

720p at either 50 or 25 frames per second

For our production we decided to use 720p at 25 frames per second because we found that when filming we would quickly run out of memory space so 720p was a sacrifice that we mad in order to allow us to capture more footage rather than filming and deleting clips that may be useful.

We also chose to use the camera in manual mode as this allowed us to adjust settings such as the exposure ,ISO , apature and the shutter speed dependant on the location and the conditions. This meant that we were able to achieve the best possible shots for our needs without making any compromises.

We also used a large number of lenses in both in our final production and in practice shots to see what we could achieve.  We use a 50mm lense to film our darker shot such as the shot in the shed and some of the woodland scenes as it’s wide lense meant that as much light as possible could hit the sensor meaning that some shots did not appear too dark. We also used a  Samyang fisheye lense for some of the woodland shots to try and create a different look but decided not to use these shots in our final production due to them not suiting the genre correctly.

We also fabricated a dolly out of very simple materials such as a kitchen work top to provide a smooth platform to coast on, a scooter to provide the moving platform and a camera handle to secure it to the scooter deck. This idea, although extremely simple worked very well and smoothly producing excellent results.

Our preliminary task for which we had two hours to film was a good indication of our knowledge at that stage as when compared to our final production it is very clear that we have progresses greatly in both editing and in terms of our filming techniques. We had the problem of batteries running out very quickly due to us watching the clips back, as well as filming without capturing too much ambient sound from the nearby road and classrooms which made the footage look quick and unplanned. We also experience the problem of unpredictable weather as on one of the days we filmed it was snowing and when we continued filming in the next lesson the weather was sunny.

When editing our final production we used adobe premier elements 9 to edit and order our clips together to produce a convincing final production that showed continuity and displayed the conventions associated with a normal horror/thriller hybrid. We also created the titles using this software by overlapping separate titles and changing their positioning and size to create a quick a scratchy look to them. This software made it easy to edit both video and audio and export the final production with ease with us choosing to export it in a custom pre setting that we had created t suit the camera preferences that we had chosen being 720p-59.9 fps in an MPEG format.

Our production only included 2 characters which meant that organising and planning was not too much of a difficulty although we did have trouble conveying our ideas over to the actor(s).We found the story board helpful in showing our actor what we required of her in order to convey our visionary idea to the audience rather than spending valuable time explain it to her.

If this were a mainstream production it would be considerably harder to plan due to the huge scale that we would be working at.

This would include:

·        Locations

·        Managing accommodation for actors and travel.

·        Catering

·        Locations

·        And moving equipment just to name a few.

Due to this there would be a team specially assigned this task to ensure that it continues unhindered and is smooth running to relieve pressure from the director so he/she can concentrate on the actual production. The production would also be edited over a large time period to make sure that the footage is perfect with the minimal amount of flaws, this process could take up to 2 years to produce a full feature length production which means that the equipment and soft/hardware would be of the highest quality. The production would also include well-known actors and locations to increase the glitz factor and increase the possible target audience which would then include people from the fan base of the chosen actors.

Question 7

HL/MS: Screening & Audience Research/ Film Opening

  • On the 22nd of April we had our Screening of our film opening, we screened our film opening to a sample of students and peers all of which were within the age of our target audience
  • The main outcomes of the screening for us was to recieve feedback from our sample target audience and to also give us a chance to see the film opening from a different perspective and see if there were any bits that we would change to the film
  • The feedback that we recieved was on the whole very positive, a majority of the feedback that we recieved was praising how we created tension in our film opening
  • However with one of our questionnaire questions related to how clear the narrative was, it was clear that many students didnt understand the film opening fully, for example the montage clip at the end
  • However we corrected this by adding the scene in the clip with the victim's eyes opening showing that she isnt dead and that the montage is simply a flashback

Here is our full edited clip (Retribution, Lukwayi, 2013)

Strengths:
  • The strong points of our film opening was that we were pleased with the variety of different and creative shots that we shot, especially in the way that this enabled us to build tension
  • Furthermore we are pleased with how the editing process in post-production went, we had long enough clips to edit with out a problem which meant that we had the required length of footage after cutting scenes
Weaknesses:
  • If we could improve the film opening we would do this by making sure that the narrative is constructed in a clear way so that audiences can understand what is going on clearer
  • We could have used the features of the camera we filmed our film opening in to its potential, by choosing to film in 1080p rather than 720p thus giving it a higher definition look and professional look
  • We could have done more in post production such as colour correcting scenes such as the first one where it is quite bright, therefore giving is a more natural look

HL: Question 1

http://prezi.com/hdbcwunj5pew/untitled-prezi/

HL:Question 2

·In our film opening there are multiple social groups that have been represented, our first social group that we represented in our film opening was a black male and the second one is a young innocent Caucasian girl
·The black male in our film opening plays the antagonist and as the stereotypes for members that belong to this group is often related to crime and often play antagonist roles in local UK independent films such as Kidulthood (Huda, 2006) this added verisimilitude to our film opening
·This is further re-enforced by his mise en scene in our film opening as he has hood up to show that he doesn’t want to be seen, this has a symbolic code in modern society often associated with crime and gangs and he produces a bludgeon out of the boot of his car which further re-enforces his relation to crime
·The young innocent girl in our film opening is shown as pale with a petit figure juxtaposed to that of the antagonist who is of a muscular build and dressed, she is dressed in overall bright colours that help to connote that she is young and innocent juxtaposed to the antagonist who is dressed in dark navy colours. In the scene when the victim is in the bathroom doing her hair this represents the social group of many teen groups as the stereotype in society is that they take excessive pride in their appearance
·In our film opening our narrative conveys certain ideological discourses of a conventional thriller film and also of small groups in society, for instance in our film opening the antagonist is shown to be powerful, this is achieved by the difference in age and also in the way he walks with authority juxtaposed to the victim who looks vulnerable and walks in a timid way, this is further reinforced by the scene when the girl is seen running away in the woods in panic but the antagonist still catches her- showing dominance
·Another social group that is represented in our film opening is the religious group, during the scene when the protagonist goes through the antagonists belongings she finds symbolic items such as a prayer book and rosary. This is juxtaposed ideological discourse of religious groups is that they embrace peace and abide the law.
·Also ideologies such as good vs evil, this is shown by the variation of what the two characters are doing during the course of the first scene. The protagonist is living a normal life doing her hair juxtaposed to the antagonist who lives a dark life and is seen acting in a peculiar way
·Also it could be argued that our film opening represents negative groups in the media such as Child abusers and men that attack women, this is due to the antagonist in our film opening being of a much older age compared to the girl who is a young teen and defenceless, in society people, this isn’t an aspect that would often be shown in a conventional horror
·However in our film opening it could be argued that some stereotypes are challenged for example the scene with the antagonist when you see him walking to the shed in a wary way. We encoded a polysemy text in that the audience could decode a lot of readings at this point. It could be concluded that the antagonist has killed or injured someone however because you don’t actually see any violence nothing can be concluded in that scene, this enigmatic tension for our film opening as the audience want to know the significance of the weapon.
·Due to there being no dialogue in our film the audience has to rely on other factors such as mise en scene and the characters body language meaning that our clip is more open to interpretation and the negotiated readings can vary
·However the characterisation of our characters has been developed in such a way that the narrative should seem clear to the audience

HL:Question 6

  • During the whole production and development process of our film opening we used a blog called http://www.blogger.com and the benefits of Web 2.0 were very clear
  • We found that with its easy to use interface we could post up research and comment on each others posts easily, we also found the blog very useful for uploading any videos from ‘YouTube’ that we found from research straight onto the blog in an efficient way
  • Also with its auto-save feature we never had any real worry about our work being lost as the blog would auto-save a post frequently
  • When shooting our wilderness woods footage and final production we used a Canon 550D, this gave us the choice between filming in 1080p at 24fps or 25fps or 720p at 50fps or 25fps as opposed to the school video recorder that we used during our preliminary task
  • We opted to film in 720p at 25fps and used a manual focus, this enabled us to change the aperture levels allowing us to turn the aperture down when a scene looked bright, also to manually adjust push and pull focuses that you see in our clip for example the last scene with the victim is lying down on the ground
  • We used wilderness woods as a test run to see how effective some of the shots would look in conveying our thriller/horror
  • We liked the idea of how we could manually use pull focus to bring shots into focus and used this as one of our A grade shots in our final production
  • One of the features we found useful with the Canon 550D was that we could adjust the aperture and control the levels of light that we wanted to let into the lens of the camera, however unfortunately when certain scenes in our final production the sky became very bright and even turning the aperture right down didn’t make much of a difference
  • During one of our shoots we also experimented with a fish eye lens which made our footage look visually distorted and gave a wider depth of the area being shot, although we liked the look of this particular footage with the fish eye lens, when editing in post-production we made the decision that it wasn’t appropriate for our genre
  • We were able to use effects on Premiere Elements 9.0 to adjust color levels and exposure using
  • We had to be cautious with the contrast and exposure levels as too much would make the footage look tacky and distorted, however we were able to prevent this from happening and accomplished similar levels of light to create continuity between different scenes
  • Due to limitations of track & dolly equipment for some of our shots this was vital to ensure a smooth shot
  • Therefore we had to improvise by creating our own track & dolly, we did this by using a rectangular plank of wood at about 1.5 meters and a skateboard, the plank allowed the skateboard to track across smoothly preventing any bumps that would have been caused by the ground

  • This type of improvising occurs even in the real film world for example (Monsters, Edwards, 2010) used cushions and pillows as a tripod in the car to steady shots
  • We tried to use visual effects on adobe premier elements like strobe light, brightness and contrast, we made a series of separate titles and moved them around by playing with the motion scale and position of the titles to create active titles that moved around the screen like (Se7en, Fincher, 1995)
  • Our production process could compare to some real life productions in the fact that many of our shots took many takes and trial and error to execute, we considered locations carefully and mise en scene and costume to add verisimilitude and we also thought very carefully about the correct soundtrack and characters to play individual roles in our film opening
  • I have learnt a lot about how effective technology is as a whole and also film productions dependence on it.
  • For our post-production we used Premiere Elements to combine together all of our footage, from this we were able to edit and cut clips that were not neccessary, we found the interface user-friendly in that we could edit singular frames and cut precisely where we wanted which made our editing work much more efficient
  • Uploading particular soundtracks that we found on (www.freesound.org) that we wanted onto Adoe Premiere Elements

wasn't a problem with the ease of the interface, an advantage of using adobe premiere elements for our soundtrack was that we could incorporate multiple soundtracks and alter sound levels by simply dragging down the sound level of the particular soundtrack, this enabled us to have our primary soundtrack whilst layering other soundtracks on top but with a lower sound level, allowing us to create a soundtrack that fitted the genre of our film opening
  • We also used Adobe Premiere Elements to export our clip, we exported our clip using a custom setting thus preventing the quality of our film opening being changing, the format we used to export was 720p at 59.9 fps in an MPEG format
  • I have learnt how to edit clips on Adobe Premiere Elements 9.0 and how to use the same clip twice but put on in reverse so that to the audience they look like to separate clips
  • I have learned about the effectiveness of primary research when developing a treatment or when wanting to receive feedback on ideas using surveys such as ‘surveymonkey’ to get constructive feedback from fellow friends,
  • Also have experienced its ease of use to get the survey out to its audience and how it collects back the data in a simplistic way
  • For a real film production its circumstances would differ, firstly they would have a much bigger budget, therefore being able to utilise professional post-production software such as Adobe CS 5.5 Production Premium, which allows editors to use software such as photoshop on clips
  • Also for a real film production you would expect there to be a much larger team involving actors and other teams such as props and costume, furthermore due to the difference in feature length between our film and an actual film opening there would be different time scales for filming and in post production

HL:Question 3

  • In the film industry there are two types of institutions, Industrial and Independent
  • Industrial institutions mainly distribute tent pole films that are produced on ultra high budgets and target the audience of four quadrants, whereas independent films are produced on low budget with very little SFX and usually target a niche audience, our film is more suitable for the independent institution model
  • Our core target audience would be males aged 15-24 as the genre for our film is horror/thriller
  • I believe that our film would be more suitable to be distributed by an independent institution, this is due to the fact that our film opening is made on low budget and our core audience doesn’t target the four quadrants unlike most tent pole films
  • It could be assumed that having our film distributed by an independent institution will mean that the success of our film will be limited due to lack of subsidiaries and partnerships that industrial institutions have the advantage of. However having said that films such as the SAW series are distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment a north American entertainment company have still managed to be successful enough to form a franchise
  • In conclusion I have decided that our film would be suited to Lions Gate Entertainment distributing films such as (The Cabin in the Woods, Goddard, 2012)
  • Our film would screen at multiplex cinemas as it is a conventional thriller/horror and would expect it to reach its target audience in the same way that the SAW series did and the likes of The Cabin in the Woods
  • Due to our target audience being between aged 15-24 this age group are positive technological determinists and therefore we would expect our film to be marketed through viral marketing campaigns such a 'Facebook'. This would also be the most cost effective way for an independent institution to market a film whilst ensuring that the film reaches its target audience
  • As our film is being distributed by an independent US institution we would expect our film to be exhibited at a film festival such as Sundance, Sundance is one of the largest film festivals in the US for independent films and it takes place annually
  • With this we would expect our film to get exposure to its market and attract more audiences to go to the cinema and watch our film

MS: Production feedback

In today's lesson we received feedback from our exported roung cuts from our teacher. We had 2 hours to make changes to our productions that we had previously exported to allow our teacher to Analise them and provide us with constructive feed back on how we could improve our productions.

Monday 25 March 2013

HL:Title Idea Development

  • Today in lesson i spoke with Miss about possible ideas for titles, originally we wanted to had an idea of having bullet time titles, whereby a scene freezes and the titles come in, however after viewing our clip and by evaulating the preferred reading of the clip and suspense built we came to the conclusion that this wouldn't be effective for our genre
  • Also we spoke about how essential it is to make sure that the titles are in a continous sequence and not just spontaneous

Outcomes

  • We have now decided that we will have titles in specific dark scenes whereby the titles will be interactive
  • Also for our title name we are going to use our last frame which is a shot of the girl lying down on the ground panning from right to left, we are going to lengthen the shot and incorporate our title name in the clip

Wednesday 20 March 2013

HCL: Revisions on pitch

Since recieving the Greenlight and audience feedback we have decided to adjust some ideas that we had whislt keeping others the same:
  • We are still keeping our idea of characters the same with the protagonist being played by an innocent looking girl and the antagonist being played my a male
  • We have decided that for our film opening having shots of the antagonist's POV would be effective as long as we can show it in a clear way, we will achieve this by having the camera move about as if it were a person as opposed to having a still tripod shot

Feedback on planning - March

Max and Henry, well done on some very good posts. There are still a number of tasks missing on this blog though. These must be done by this evening otherwise you will lose marks from your planning grade as i will be doing the grades tonight. One of you needs to go through the blog today with the list and ensure everything is up to date, post images and clips as evidence for posts, comment on each other blog posts and highlight key media terms throughout.

HCL: Title Opening Post

  • In today's lesson we have been thinking about ideas for our titles in our film opening
  • We have decided that we would like to have titles that are active and interact with what is happening in the particular scene
  • Doing some research of other AS media film openings we found a clip with interactive titles that we would like to use in our film opening
  • This clip is called 'The Edge- AS Level Media Opening Sequence by Rory Campbell'

MS:Evaluation and Feedback on rough cut

  • In today's lesson we viewed and commented on each others final production rough cuts so far.  Although short Henry and i received some good positive feedback from our peers with very little negative feedback which was mostly based on our order of shots and the stability of some of out shots. Also other students thought that our soundtrack corresponded with our footage very well, although we just used the soundtrack as a tester
  • Our positive feedback included our shot of the girl laying on the floor with the killers feet walking into and out of the frame whilst picking up the camera as our fellow peers felt that this shot was captured well and was effective
  • Other students also like the use of the fish eye lense which was used to follow the killer in third person whilst walking to the shed as it made a relatively un-interesting shot more attractive and eye catching for the viewer.
  • Constructive feedback that we recieved including was that we needed to order some of our clips more carefully so that they would make more sense, particularly the shot with the antagonists feet where the feet should be at the end as opposed to at the end of the clip
  • The class liked the reverse fast forward montage that we had at the end of the clip

Monday 18 March 2013

HL:Editing Soundtrack

  • Today we put a soundtrack into our film opening clip, we found the track on 'freesound.org' and simply downloaded it onto a usb, from this we were able to open the soundtrack and save it onto premiere elements together with our clip
  • We were able to then open the soundtrack file and simply drag it down onto the bar where you can see the soundtrack heading
  • The next step in our editing process will be to cut the soundtrack in various parts to make the visuals

Sunday 17 March 2013

HCL/MS:Final Shoot Evaluation

  • Having finished our final shoot at Max's house today we were able to capture the various types of shots that we wanted to shoot, this included the extreme close ups of the antagonists belongings in his box which we were most worried about shooting as we wanted to show them in a way which makes them appear suspicious and link them to the final scene of the girl on the floor.
  • However due to unpredictable weather conditions with rain coming and going and only a limited period of time we had to be patient to allow for continuity in our shots which meant filming when light levels matched our previously filmed footage to make sure that it would not look out of place when edited together with the other footage.
  • Whilst filming our establishing shot of the antagonist exiting the car we were struggling with filming a smooth pan of the antagonist walking to the boot of the car, however we found a slate in the garage and a scooter, this enabled us to create our own track thus allowing us to shoot the smooth pan that we wanted.
  • During our final shoot we changed the lens of the camera to a 'Samyang fisheye' lens which we liked, it gave objects surrounding us whilst filming an obscure look which looked which made over the shoulder and other shots that followed people more interesting for the viewer to watch.

-We made a decision whilst filming that we would like to include a tracking shot within our production but as the school recourse's only has one track available to use we were unable to use it as other groups had booked it out before us,due to this we decided to experiment using a very simple idea which included a kitchen work top and a scooter which eventually worked very smoothly due to the wheels on the scooter and the smooth worktop producing no bumps.

HL:Extended Writing Activity

Institutional context- Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 & 2

Has a high profile star been used in this film and why is it important?

  • Daniel radcliffe has been used in the film opening
  • This is important as Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) is the main character in the clip and this is the last film in the sequel and so the audience will be especially interested to see him in action.
Which studio produced this film?
  • Warner Bros. Pictures
Is it an Industrial or Independent film production?
  • Industrial film production
What strategies were used to market this film?
  • Two minute trailer for the film was released on 22nd september 2010
  • ABC Family broadcasted interviews and additional scenes from both parts 1 & 2 during 'Harry Potter' weekend which began on 8 July 2010
  • On 29th September 2010, three character posters for Part 1 of Harry, Ron, Hermione were released via Yahoo! Movies
  • On 15th October 2010 tickets began selling on Fandango for the US release of Part 1 and on the 19th October, a 50-second clip featuring never before seen footage was aired at the 2010 Scream Awards
  • On the 3rd November 2010, the Los Angeles Times released an extended clip of Harry leaving the Burrow to find the Horcruxes titled "No One Else Is Going to Die For Me"
Is the institutional context evident in the production values of the opening?

Media Audiences- (Triangle,2009, Smith)

Who is the target audience?
  • The target audience for Triangle is a 15-24, this is due to the film being a pyschological horror and having some elements of blood and gore although this doesn't seem apparent in the opening title sequence.
What are the probable and possible audience readings of text?
  • The possible audience readings of the opening scene are that its not a stereotypical horror, the opening scene consists of bright lighting and doesnt really give the text a stereotypical look of a horror. However the music that plays and how the titles appear distorted connote the genre of the film and informs the audience that the film is a horror genre
How do you, as a British teenager, read and evaluate the text? to what extent is your reading and evaluation influenced by your age, gender and background?
  • The way I read the text is that it doesn't have the look of a typical horror film, infact when going to watch the film in the theatre i didn't realise that it was a horror until the middle of the film
  • I have watched many other horror films and usually they all have a similar look to them in terms of isolation and greyed colours, however with Triangle this is the opposite with many characters and people in the scene where they are boarding the boat.

MS:Extended writing activity

Institutional context-Skyfall

  • Has a high profile star been used in this film and why is this important?-The actor Danie Craig has been used in previous James Bond films as well as in other large productions such as the girl with the dragon tatto which attracts audiences from other genres to this production as some people may want to watch the film purley because he is the main character.
  • Which studio produced this film?-Eon Productions
  • Is it industrial or and independent film production?-Industrial film production
  • What strategies were used to market the film?
Strategies used:
-The main theme tune that runs throughout the film and the trailer is performed by the very famous singer Adele which opens up the potential audience to all of the people that support her work as a singer.
-There was also a large Heineken advert campaign that stared Daniel Craig and promoted the film the film Skyfall.
-The film was also promoted at the 2012 Olympics with a short 30 second preview being shown to draw in huge potential audience numbers and create buzz.
-A symbolic partnership was also founded between coca-cola and skyfall.
  • Is the institutional context evident in the production values of the opening?

Media Audiences-Dawn of the dead

  • Who is the target audience?
-The film was released in the UK with a guided rating by the BBFC of 16 both fort he theatrical and uncut version but the directors cut of the production was rated at an 18 because the extras that were featured we more graphic that the footage used in the final production.Due to the removal of these scenes it shows that the target audience is obviously the middle aged teenager which fits in with the trend that most horror productions target audiences are males that are between the age of 16-35.
  • What are the probable and possible audience readings of the text?
- I feel that the audience agrees with the preferred reading. My reasons for this is that the audience agrees with the codes of the production which make this production effective and conform with the usual conventions of a horror film.
-An example of this is the titles used, the titles are the same colour as blood and with the footage in the background of zombies covered in blood and prosthetics to create a gore look they emphasise the genre of the production.

  • How do you, as a British teenager, read and evaluate the text?To what extent is your evaluation influenced by your age, gender and background?
-I felt that the text does conform with the different aspects of the horror genre that you would expect to see in a production of this type so i would read it like any other typical horror film of this type.
-From watching the opening scene i can gather enough information to suggest that this production is not suitable for children who are young due to the graphic content that is shown and the general narrative. I also feel that the male audience members like me watch productions like this due to the thrill and excitement that they experience rather than the actual plot of the production.

The girl with the dragon tattoo:Media Language

  • How does mise en scene convey meaning in this sequence?
-The characters and objects filmed are covered in a black paint or a dark liquid, this conveys a sense of mystery among the characters as we cannot see their faces properly. The Meaning of this is to reflect the film and its secrecy as the opening title doesn't give any information away about the film.
  • How does camera shot size, movement and angle convey meaning?
-The opening scene uses two different camera shot sizes, movement and angle convey the meaning of the film to the audience. We see a large number of close ups again creating drama in the title sequence. Furthermore all camera shots are moving rather than static which means the audience has a limited time to view the on screen content so further creates mystery.
  • How does sound anchor the images?-The song used in the opening sequence of 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. The immigrant song by led zeplin is a loud powerful soundtrack that builds the tension and i widely recognised by a large number of people..
  • What do we learn about the characters through dialogue and non-verbal language?
-There is no dialogue featured in the opening sequence of this film which has been done on purpose too create a sense of mystery and build suspense.
  • What other visual techniques does the director use and why?-The director uses other visual techniques that include shots like panning and zooming shots, this is used by the director to keep the clip fast pace and sustain mystery. For example there is  a shot of one of the characters but a zoom or pan is used to hide their face so that no information is given away.
